Nutrition Services adds state-of-the-art
precision to hospital’s weight management services

Upland Hills Health new service enables caregivers to
calculate resting metabolic rate with a simple breathing
test. |

Hills Health nutrition professionals are now armed with the
accuracy of an indirect calorimeter to measure an individual’s true metabolic
rate. By conducting a simple breath test, they are
able to measure an individual’s resting metabolic rate.
Resting metabolic rate can account for up to 75% of the
calories a person burns each day. This scientifically determined
rate helps caregivers establish the patient’s best
calorie intake to assist in reaching their weight and health
goals.
Many factors make metabolism different from person to person:
weight, gender, body composition (% of body fat and muscle),
age, and health. The indirect colorimeter provides a “Metabolic
Fingerprint” for each individual.
The device will be instrumental in helping to care for patients
with specific health issues like diabetes, obesity, trauma,
and cancer. “It is also a great tool for people taking
a proactive approach to their health—managing their
weight to eliminate weight-related health issues in the future,” commented
Upland Hills Health Director of Nutrition Services Elizabeth
Berkey.
