Sele Hufton, R.N. and Ginny Haas, R.N., long-time
members of the nursing team at Upland Hills Health’s
Emergency Department, are trained and practicing as
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, or SANEs.
Sexual assault victims often feel re-traumatized during
their emergency room visit because of the very sensitive
nature of their injuries. With SANEs on staff, Upland
Hills Health is able to offer a better exam experience
to sexual assault victims and continue to ensure that
they get the services they need.
The SANEs work with local law enforcement and Iowa
County Sexual Assault Advocates through a SART, or
Sexual Assault Response Team, to help wholly treat
victims.
Hufton and Haas both completed two 40-hour training
sessions, one focusing on adult victims and one on
pediatric victims. Both trainings included extensive
classroom work, as well as practice exams and forensic
training.
These nurses are able to use their deep level of training
to treat victims of sexual assault compassionately
and efficiently—and since they work opposite
shifts, a trained SANE is always available at Upland
Hills Health.
